Old faithful I've had this camera since 2007. So 5 years now. Many, many photographs later -- in jungles, sandstorms, torrential rain, snow, and at incredibly high altitudes, it still continues to serve me well. It's been great to own. And I can't say I, even now, feel the need to replace it. (It's one weakness is poor low-light ability, but for a camera shipped in 2005, you can't blame it, or compare it to the newer cameras out there) February 4, 2012
A serious prosumer DSLR. I got one of the first D200's in Maine and it has been an excellent "workhorse" for me. Quite replete with features and functions. Excellent image quality. Magnesium body has proven its worth (I have fallen on it several times). Low light level limitations on focus speed and not great at high ISO's. October 20, 2011
Great Camera! I have had the D-200 for over 5 yrs. It has work smoothly and flawlessly. The controls are easy to use once you get used to it. It seems to be standard on Nikon D cameras. The full frame picture is the reason I purchased this camera. This is a keeper!. September 17, 2011
Excellent, but small sensor has limitations The camera produces excellent pictures. Noise in dark shadows can be a problem at higher ISO settings. As with film cameras the smaller sensor size can be a bit of an issue with big enlargements. Conservative use of VR and a tripod can minimize this issue. Also the small sensor's 1.5X factor reduces the field, so that one loses the wide angle effect of wide angle lenses. In all other ways, this is a splendid camera. August 22, 2011
Still a great camera! Two month after I had bought my D200 the D300 came out. Bad luck I thought... now I am waiting for a successor of the D700 before I upgrade to FX format. I still love working with the D200 in spite of all the advancements and improvements that Nikon made since the D200. The ergonomics of the D200 are perfect for me; plus she takes great photographs and has never let me down. Accidentally, I left her out in the rain one night. She didn't even sneeze the next day and just kept doing her job. The D200 still is a great camera that I will not part with no matter what my next camera will turn out to be. August 1, 2011

Popular Photography & Imaging

Popular Photography & Imaging, Winter 2007

Popular Photography & Imaging has recognized the Nikon D200 as one of the outstanding products of photography in 2006. Editor Michael McNamara summed up the D200’s award selection by stating that the camera is “fast, reliable and capable of handling a wide variety of conditions.” McNamara points out that the excellent image quality, tough camera body, long battery life and superb optical viewfinder make the D200 a true award-winning camera.

Noting that the D200 is extremely responsive with a “big for its class” optical viewfinder and a “rock-solid construction,” Barkey also notes his fulfillment with the camera’s variety of user-friendly attributes. Hello, I would like to take 5 photos set at -2, -1, 0, +1, +2. I can easily set this up but is there a way to have the camera take all 5 pictures in a row by just pressing the shutter release once? I don't want to have to press the shutter release 5 times to take these 5 pictures.

Answer:
You have to press the shutter 5 times or you can set the camera in continuous but you will need to hold the shutter button down until it takes the 5 pictures.

I have the same problem and am using an "approved" memory card (SDCFX (Extreme III) 4 GB). The card has been in use for quite some time. After image download to computer, the card has been routinely reformatted in-camera.

You can set this up yourself by going to the setup menu (with the little wrench icon) and adding a commentary line to your photos. I have it set to add my e-mail address in stead of my serial number though.

Answer:
Nikon does not disclose camera API code, but you'll find a lot about if you do an Internet search. As to controlling the D200 from a computer, you have the $180 Nikon Camera Control Pro 2, and, again with some Internet search, you'll find several third party software that will provide you with some camera control functionality - some of them even for free - although I don't know of any that gives you absolute full control as the NCCP does.

Answer:
1) The D200 shares the basics with most dSLRs. The instruction manual is probably the best start. If you like to read, several intermediate and advanced books about the D200 are available at most online book stores. If you prefer more intuitive tutorials, there are literally *hundreds* if you search the web for "d200 tutorials". Last - but not least -, try to learn one item at a time, try it on the camera, take notes, and only then move on to a different subject. I may suggest you start learning the 6 most important settings: autofocus (continuous and single; focusing area), diaphragm aperture (depth of field control, diffraction control, best sharpness point), shutter speed, ISO, and white balance. After these, complete your knowledge with flash usage (specially the different shutter syncs available). Enjoy the process!

2) It's a fairly old camera, made way before digitutor was released. Since it's been discontinued for almost four years now, I don't believe Nikon will put the effort (and the cost) of developing one.
