Great Flash That Does Not Disappoint
I own two of these flashes.
I use them all the time. It does exactly what I expect under all conditions. I can take pictures that I was never able to before owning this outstanding flash. Fill-flash outdoors especially during sun back-lighting conditions is fantastic.
My only ding that I would give it is that the UI does not have perfect usability. I am able to figure out how to do everything I need to using the excellent manual, but the design could be better.
Great, great flash. I am very satisfied!

Almost perfect
I have used this flash very heavily for the last 7 years and it does not miss a beat. Battery life is good and the flash is totally reliable and accurate. I prefer it to the SB900. The flash is compatible with all mycameras and lenses and rarely fails to give the correct TTL exposure. The 5th battery attachment has pros and cons. I almost always use it but it is not meant for rough handling. The attachment can come loose and fall off dumping batteries on the ground. Otherwise this flash is a dependable workhorse.

I have two of these and they are extremely inconsistent. Even with new batteries, they do not recycle as fast as they should

small, powerful
The SB800 is a very good performer for the sort of flash applications that I have. It is small, flexible and powerful. It is not easy to learn ( the manual is terrible!) and the controls are not intuitive, but once mastered, it is great. I plan to keep mine for a loong time.

Wonder Flash
After purchasing my first SB 800, I quickly decided I would add one a year and stopped at four units. These flashes are great and I wish they were still available. They were miles ahead on this one.

I've been using my SB-800 with my D-700 for several years now with no problems. Are you saying that you have never had it work with your camera? Strange???
When you put it on your camera it should fire without you doing anything special.
oh, don't forget to put batteries in it.

Yes. The SB800 and D3000 both support the Nikon CLS (Creative Lighting System). Please review the manuals for both to determine all the functions supported as CLS covers a lot of ground.

Per the Nikon D3000 brochure on page 9 the SB-800 is compatible. See below:http://www.nikonusa.com/en_INC/IMG/Assets/Digital-SLR/2010/25462-Nikon-D3000/PDF/25462_D3000_brochure.pdf
• TTL: i-TTL balanced fill-flash and standard i-TTL flash for digital SLR using 420-pixel RGB sensor are available
with built-in flash and SB-900, SB-800, SB-600, or SB-400 (i-TTL balanced fill-flash is available when matrix
or center-weighted metering is selected)
• Auto aperture: Available with SB-900/SB-800 and CPU lens
• Non-TTL auto: Supported flash units include SB-900, SB-800, SB-80DX, SB-28DX, SB-28, SB-27, and SB-22S
• Range-priority manual: Available with SB-900 and SB-800
The SB-800 was discontinued around late 2008 and the Nikon D300o was introduced July 30, 2009. That could be the reason some of the D3000 documentation does not show the SB-800 as being compatible. Instead Nikon recommended the speed lights that were in production.
Good luck and enjoy the SB-800.

I keep seeing references to an "old version" of the SB-800 flash, but can't find any information about what distinguishes it from a newer version or when the old was sold versus the new.

The only service modification performed on an SB-800 Speedlight was to allow the newer plug fitting for the SD-9 High Perfomance Battery Pack. That may be what they are referring to.Has staff answer
