It is old but does what it has to do, brilliantly!
I got it for my sb-700 flashlight, and then discovered that it was not necessary as my D7000 has commander flash available. But the SU-4 eliminates the annoying sound of the flash and has perfect timing with my camera, it can also be used with flashes with no wireless features like the SB-400, cool!!

Is the SU-4 compatable with iTTL of the newer digital cameras, D300, D7000, D3, etc? Will it read the pre-pulses and respond like the SU-600, SU-800, SU-900...?

I read that it was compatible with automatic TTL or manual exposure control in the instructions. What I would like to know is if the SU-4 is compatible with iTTL specifically. As asked: "Will it read the pre-pulses and respond like the SU-600, SU-800, SU-900...?" Thanks.

Yes it will work but you really dont need it if you are trying to get flash off camera. Just use your D90 in commander mode to control your SB-600
Can I use the SB600 mounted on the SU-4 and have the built-in flash from the D3000 trigger the SB600? Will the SU-4 properly fire and quench the SB500 automatically? How do I set the D3000 not to send out preflashes and still have TTL flash metering?

Yes, you can use the SB-600 mounted in the SU-4 (will convert the speedlight into an optical slave) and trigger it with the flash from the D3000. Please note that pre-flash may occur if there's low light condition for metering.Has staff answer

Answer:
You are correct. The Nikon D5100 built-in flash can trigger (but not command) the SB-600 with the SU-4 attached to it.Note that it is not a wireless commander so iTTL (Nikon CLS) is not available. Instead an old-TTL mode which is (to my knowledge) not available on modern Nikon digital bodies is. However, most people shooting this way will use set the SB-600 into manual mode.
Note that the SB-800 has the SU-4 mode built in. I believe the SB-900 does also.
