Good device, poor cable. If you are willing to spend the amount of money Nikon is asking, this is a pretty good device. I use it as a basic trigger and I frequently use the automatic timer for exposures longer than 30 seconds. There is no on/off switch, but the AAA batteries seem to last a very long time if you keep it "locked" when not in use. It has a little LED that flashes as the second count down, but it would be nice if there was some more feedback as to how long remaining on the exposure. If I have the shutter open for an hour, or some other long duration, I also have to check my watch to avoid picking the unit up to turn on the LCD back light and display the remaining time. It does take a bit to figure out all the setup possibilities, but it is not too hard once you get the hang of it. My only real complaint is the cable. I have had mine for about 5 years and after about 2 the cable end that attaches to the camera split open. There is a reinforcement, but it is not good enough. It is also very hard to secure the cable to the camera. I have small hands, but it is very hard to get the thread on the locking ring to connect. November 6, 2011
Nikon MC-36 I bought this product approximately eight months ago. Many of the features it offers are redundant if you already own a D3. Additionally, the LED display is far to dim and small. The manual is not clearly written, and the price Nikon charges for this product is excessive. Save your money and by the less expensive model. For those of us who already made the mistake of purchasing this accessory the is a U-tube video that will give the guidance that Nikon does not. February 8, 2011
must have I can't imagine a poorer description of this intervalometer when compared to the internal programming available in the camera than the previous reviewers "slight advantage". This is a far cry from the internal option and has MANY advantages over it. I've tried knock off products and none compate to the MC-36. A staple for any camera bag. January 26, 2011
Very specialised A lot of the functionality of this widget is already available within the camera. If you do a lot of star trails, and the like, it is slightly easier to use this device, but then you lose the ability to use the GPS-1. November 13, 2010

I need 2500 exposures in a time lapse, so the in-built software doesn't allow for it.

Answer:
The MC-36 uses a 10-pin cable which the D7000 does not have. My only suggestion for this is to use the Nikon Camera Control Pro which you can set Time Lapse for as many pictures as you want or until you tell it to stop. You will need to carry a laptop with you is the only downside but works like a charm. I was able to capture the sunset every 3 seconds for 1 hour to create a nice smooth time lapse sunset.
Here is a link for the software download page: http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/17029/~/camera-control-pro---2.8.0

Answer:
No, that MC-36 has a very different plug. You need a MC-DC1 Remote Release Cord (1 meter) for the D80
